Which Fanatec Steering Wheel is Best for PlayStation?

Last updated:

One of the great features of Fanatec hardware is that any self-contained steering wheel or hub-based wheel can be used on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 if you’re using the correct Base. Any Fanatec product connected to a PlayStation-licensed Base becomes compatible with the console. This means you’re not limited to a particular group of wheels.

Even Xbox-licensed Steering Wheels work on PlayStation when attached to a PlayStation-licensed Base. The Xbox-themed button caps are usually removable, and the wheel's firmware is ready to provide the essential inputs for PlayStation, i.e. the 'PS' button to sign in and the 'X' and 'O' face buttons. The Quick Guide (on the product page) for every wheel always details the default input assignments for every platform.

Choosing your wheel based on driving style

Your ideal setup really depends on the types of races and sims you’re interested in. Here are some quick considerations:

Formula

If you drive open-wheel style (F1-type), you might prefer a Formula steering wheel that is smaller in diameter for fast direction changes, has many buttons and other inputs for advanced controls.

GT

The GT category is broad, covering racing categories including GT3 where around 300 mm diameter butterfly shaped wheels are most common. It also covers high performance road cars, where a larger diameter round or D-shaped wheel is useful. Read more about GT-style wheels.

Drift

If drifting is your thing, the wheel you choose should be round to allow the wheel to pass smoothly through your hands. Your Base settings make a big difference here - it is essential to find the appropriate damping to optimize rotational responsiveness. Read more about preparing a Drift setup for your rig.

Gran Turismo® 7

If you mainly play Gran Turismo, the Gran Turismo DD Pro and Gran Turismo DD Extreme bundles both come with steering wheels designed in collaboration with Polyphony Digital, ensuring optimal control over all the games functions on and off track.

The CSL Elite Steering Wheel Porsche Vision GT is also optimized for Gran Turismo.

Choosing the right PlayStation-licensed Base

The current PlayStation-licensed Bases from Fanatec are the ClubSport DD+ and the Gran Turismo DD Pro Wheel Base. These include the Sony security chip required to activate PS4/PS5 compatibility.

Recommendations at a glance

  • For an enthusiast-level Base with enough torque headroom to handle all types of driving, from GT, Formula, Rally, Drift, etc.: go with the ClubSport DD+ (15 Nm torque). It also includes FullForce technology which adds immersive vibration effects in supported games, including Gran Turismo 7.
  • The Gran Turismo DD Pro Wheel Base is a great choice at a lower price, still delivering powerful and detailed force feedback (8 Nm torque)
  • The Gran Turismo DD Pro is a bundled version of the Base with steering wheel and pedals at 5 Nm (upgradeable to 8 Nm). This is an ideal starter set if you need the full package.

If you need Xbox-compatibility, then you need to select an Xbox-licensed Steering Wheel or Hub. There are many different styles available that incorporate the ClubSport Universal Hub V2 for Xbox. Learning more about the Fanatec ecosystem can help you understand compatibility with various platforms.
