How Much Space Do Fanatec Sim Racing Setups Need?

Last updated:

Embarking on a sim racing journey can be an exciting experience, but one of the most important considerations is the space needed to set up your rig comfortably and safely. Fanatec offers a range of products from simple desk mounts to full cockpit setups. Understanding the space, weight, and measurements involved can help you create the perfect racing environment.

Desk mount setups

Desk mounts like the ClubSport DD Table Clamp are ideal for beginners or those with limited space. This allows for the temporary mounting of a direct drive base (and wheel) such as the CSL DD or ClubSport DD to a desk or table. (The ClubSport DD Table Clamp is not compatible with the Podium DD1 or DD2. These bases are compatible with the ClubSport Table Clamp V2.)

Space Requirements:

  • Measurements:
    • Width: Approximately 50-70 cm (20-28 inches)
    • Depth: Around 30-50 cm (12-20 inches)
    • Height: Varies depending on the desk and mount, usually around 20-40 cm (8-16 inches)
  • Additional space:
    • You should allow for at least 30 cm (12 inches) of clearance behind the wheel for comfortable reach and movement.
    • Space for pedals on the floor, typically requiring about 50-60 cm (20-24 inches) in width and 30-40 cm (12-16 inches) in depth.

Weight considerations:

  • Fanatec’s CSL DD or Podium Wheel Bases weigh between 4-8 kg (9-18 lbs).
  • The desk mount itself is lightweight, usually under 2 kg (4.4 lbs), making it easy to move or reposition.

Desk clamp setups pros and cons

Pros:

  • Space-saving: They require less room and are ideal for smaller rooms or if you want flexibility.
  • Easy to install and remove: Quick and straightforward installation. Once you’ve bolted the base to the clamp, the clamping part is easily done by hand. The base can be added and removed from your desk in a matter of seconds.
  • More affordable: Clamp setups generally have a lower cost than full cockpits.

Cons:

  • Stability: During intense turns or heavy steering, the setup might move or wobble – this is largely dependent on the strength of your desk.
  • Limited adjustability: There are fewer options to customize the position for comfort.
  • Less realism: The experience is usually less immersive compared to a dedicated cockpit, as it is difficult to achieve a realistic driving position.

Full cockpit setups

For the most immersive experience, full cockpit setups include a dedicated frame, seat, and additional accessories like shifters and handbrakes. Minimum measurements of setup cockpits can vary, based on added accessories, however the following data can be used as a rule of thumb to ensure you don’t underestimate the required dedicated area.

Space requirements shown below are not exact and are based on both the smaller CSL Cockpit and larger ClubSport GT Cockpit:

  • Measurements:
    • Width: ca. 80-200 cm (ca. 32-80 inches)
    • Depth: ca. 150-300 cm (ca. 39-120 inches)
    • Height: ca. 120-150 cm (ca. 47-60 inches), depending on seat height and monitors used
  • Additional space:
    • Depending on the location of the rig, make sure you have easy access to enter and exit the cockpit
    • Room for peripherals and movement during intense racing sessions are considerations that are factored in

Weight considerations:

  • Full cockpits can weigh between 32-120 kg (66-265 lbs), depending on materials and complexity.
  • They are usually mounted on the floor or a dedicated platform, requiring a stable, reinforced surface.

Cockpit setup pros and cons

Pros:

  • Stability: Full cockpits provide a very stable platform, which is especially beneficial during intense racing sessions.
  • Better Force Feedback: A rock-solid rig means that your direct drive base is securely hard-mounted, allowing you to feel the full performance of the motor (with none of the details lost to flex). Fine vibrations (for instance via FullForce) can also transmit through the frame, enhancing immersion.
  • Consistency: A strong rig means that your equipment feels the same every time you jump in. This allows you to practice more effectively and become more consistent with your inputs.
  • Comfort: Ergonomics are better, allowing you to sit comfortably for longer periods.
  • Adjustability: Both models can be adjusted in height, seat position, and wheel angle to achieve the perfect fit.
  • Realistic feel: Sitting in a dedicated cockpit enhances immersion and makes the racing experience more authentic.

Cons:

  • Space requirements: You need to dedicate a space to a cockpit, which is not practical for everyone. The ClubSport GT Cockpit has a large footprint, particularly with the triple monitor stand. The CSL Cockpit is a better choice for those with limited space, and it is light enough to be moved around relatively easily.
  • Cost: Cockpits are more expensive than temporary solutions like desk clamps.
  • Assembly time: Fanatec cockpits are designed to be easy to assemble and include all the tools you need. However, building and setting up a cockpit can be time-consuming and sometimes a second person is helpful when mounting or moving heavy components.

Ultimately, choosing the right setup depends on your available space, budget, and how immersive you want your sim racing experience to be.
