CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit vs Clutch Kit: What’s the Difference?

Last updated:

If you’re looking to upgrade your Fanatec CSL Pedals, you’ve likely come across two popular options: the CSL Pedals Clutch Kit and the CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit. Both offer performance enhancements, but they serve very different purposes. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide which is right for your sim racing setup.

What is the CSL Pedals Clutch Kit?

The Clutch Kit is a simple add-on that introduces a third pedal to your CSL Pedals set. Designed specifically as a clutch pedal, it’s a cost-effective option for those who want to use a manual shifter like the ClubSport Shifter SQ V1.5 or simply want a complete three-pedal layout and use steering wheel input to shift.

  • Sensor Type: Hall effect sensor (contactless and durable)
  • Compatibility: Must be connected through a Fanatec wheelbase; no native USB support
  • Use Case: Ideal if you’re just starting out and only need a clutch pedal without changing the brake feel

However, it doesn’t upgrade your brake pedal or improve pedal realism. It's a straightforward clutch addition – nothing more, nothing less.

What is the CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit?

The Load Cell Kit is a more advanced upgrade that replaces the original brake pedal with a load cell brake. Unlike a typical position-based pedal, a load cell measures pressure, giving you a much more realistic and consistent braking experience – crucial for competitive sim racing.

But that’s not all. When you install the Load Cell Kit:

  • The original brake pedal is repurposed as the clutch.
  • The new load cell becomes the brake (load cell sensitivity (approx.. 10 kg minimum) adjustable via Tuning Menu or Fanatec Control Panel on PC).
  • It connects via USB, so it can work standalone on PC.
  • It’s console-compatible when used through a Fanatec wheelbase.

This means you don’t need the Clutch Kit if you’re buying the Load Cell Kit – it already gives you all three pedals.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy the Clutch Kit if you’re on a tight budget and simply want to add a clutch pedal to your existing setup.
  • Buy the Load Cell Kit if you want the biggest performance upgrade. It enhances your braking accuracy and gives you a clutch without needing another purchase.

It’s important to note that you don’t need both kits. The Load Cell Kit includes everything the Clutch Kit offers – and much more.

While both kits expand your sim racing setup, they serve different goals. The Clutch Kit is great for beginners who just want a three-pedal layout. But for serious sim racers, the Load Cell Kit is a no-brainer – it dramatically improves braking precision and includes clutch functionality as a bonus.
