Planning your upgrade from QR1 to QR2

If you have been using Fanatec hardware for several years, you might still be on a QR1 setup. 'QR1' refers to the original quick release, introduced on the original Fanatec Wheel Base in 2012. 'QR2' is a new design with a different style of mechanical connection that was initially designed by Fanatec for motorsport use and was optimized for sim racing.

Moving to QR2 means considering both sides of the connection, particularly if you own several steering wheels.

Current Fanatec Wheel Bases already come with QR2, but earlier CSL DD and Gran Turismo DD Pro units shipped with QR1. These can be converted using the QR2 Base-Side (Type-C). The earliest Direct Drive Bases from Fanatec, the Podium DD1 and DD2, can also be converted. These require the QR2 Base-Side (Type-M). Fanatec does not offer an accessory to upgrade older belt-driven bases to QR2.

There is another reason for CSL DD and GT DD Pro owners to consider upgrading today. In June 2026, FullForce support was added to these bases through a free firmware update. These physics-based vibration effects bring a new level of detail to hardware that may already be several years old.

FullForce was developed with the higher precision mechanical connection of QR2 in mind. If your CSL DD or GT DD Pro still uses QR1, upgrading to QR2 can help transmit the finer FullForce effects more effectively.

Before buying a QR2 Base-Side upgrade accessory for your CSL DD or GT DD Pro, it is worth considering moving up to a more powerful Base instead.

ClubSport DD (15 Nm), ClubSport DD+ (18 Nm), and Podium DD (25 Nm) were developed with FullForce in mind from the outset, and their shaft design and higher torque, and more advanced motor controller makes FullForce even more effective. CSL DD and GT DD Pro received the technology later through extensive firmware development.

For drivers looking for a broader performance upgrade, moving to one of these newer bases gives you QR2 as standard alongside several other performance benefits.

Once the base is sorted, consider how many wheels you want to bring across. Every compatible QR1 wheel requires its own QR2 Wheel-Side. You do not necessarily need to convert your entire collection at once. Start with the wheels you use most, and expand from there.
