Fanatec ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles vs Magnetic Paddle Module: What’s the Difference?

Last updated:

When building or upgrading your sim racing setup, your choice of shifter paddles can significantly affect your driving experience. Fanatec, a leader in sim racing hardware, offers various shifter options tailored for different styles and preferences. Two popular options are the ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles and the ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module. Though they may sound similar, they serve very different purposes and cater to different types of sim racers.

ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles

The ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles are designed for use with hubs like the Podium Hub or ClubSport Universal Hub V2. Their defining feature is that they remain stationary behind the steering wheel—they do not rotate with the wheel. This is particularly beneficial in disciplines such as rally racing or drifting, where the driver’s hands frequently move around the wheel. With static paddles, you always know exactly where your shifters are, regardless of the wheel’s rotation angle, so you can shift with confidence mid-corner.

This setup mimics real-world rally and off-road race cars, where shifters are often mounted directly on the column for consistency and ease of access. For sim racers who like to let the wheel rotate freely or use non-standard hand positions, static paddles provide an ergonomic and functional advantage.

ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module

In contrast, the Magnetic Paddle Module is all about improving the tactile feedback of your shifts. Designed as an upgrade for compatible Fanatec steering wheels, this module replaces the standard mechanical shifters with magnetically actuated paddles. The result is a more crisp, responsive, and satisfying click each time you shift gears.

These magnetic paddles rotate with the wheel, as is typical in Formula and GT-style racing. They’re ideal for users who want to feel every shift with precision and speed—especially in high-pressure sim racing environments. Additionally, magnetic systems are known for their durability and reliability, with no springs or contacts that wear out over time.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose the ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles if you race in rally or drifting sims, or if you want your paddle location to stay fixed regardless of wheel rotation.
  • Opt for the ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module if you’re focused on Formula or GT racing, and want a high-quality shift feel with fast, consistent input.

Note: Because the ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles where designed some time ago, they are only compatible with older wheel bases, such as the CSL Elite, CSW V1, V2 and V2.5, PodiumDD1, Podium DD2 and CSL DD or GT DD.

Ultimately, these two options aren’t direct competitors—they solve different problems. Some advanced setups even combine both for a versatile driving experience. Understanding their differences ensures your sim rig is perfectly tailored to your racing style.
