Differences Between QR2 Lite and QR2 Wheel-Side

Last updated:

Fanatec’s QR2 system is a major evolution in sim racing hardware, delivering improved strength, precision, and ease of use over the earlier QR1 generation. Within this system, users can choose between the QR2 Lite Wheel-Side and the QR2 Wheel-Side, both compatible with the latest QR2 Base-Side units, but tailored to different use cases and performance levels.

Build quality and materials

The QR2 Wheel-Side is machined from diecast aluminium and finished with black anodising for added durability. It’s designed to deliver a solid, flex-free connection between wheel and base, ideal for sim racers seeking a reliable and consistent driving experience, especially when using high-torque setups.

The QR2 Lite Wheel-Side, on the other hand, uses a carbon fibre-reinforced composite to offer a lighter, more cost-effective alternative. It replaces the previous QR1 Lite Wheel-Side in CSL Series products, improving rigidity, minimizing noise, and providing an overall better feel—even outperforming older metal QR1 variants in some user feedback. Despite its lighter build, many users report excellent performance even under frequent use.

Compatibility and torque support

While both versions work with Fanatec’s QR2 Base-Side, their torque compatibility differs. The QR2 Lite Wheel-Side does not support High Torque Mode on Podium DD bases and has limited support on ClubSport DDs—except for the GT DD Extreme wheel, which is a special case. It’s best suited for CSL DD setups (5Nm or 8Nm), where it performs extremely well within its intended range.

The QR2 Wheel-Side fully supports High Torque Mode on Podium and ClubSport wheel bases, making it the better choice for those pushing higher FFB levels and using ClubSport or Podium wheels.

However, those seeking the highest level of durability and precision—whether for professional sim racing or real-world motorsport applications—should consider the QR2 Pro Wheel-Side. Crafted from a single block of aviation-grade billet aluminium, it meets FIA standards and represents the pinnacle of Fanatec’s quick release technology.

Which one should you choose?

If you’re using a CSL DD and plan to stay within 8Nm of torque, the QR2 Lite Wheel-Side is more than capable, offering great performance with less cost. If you want to unlock High Torque Mode or plan to upgrade to stronger wheel bases or premium steering wheels, the QR2 Wheel-Side makes more sense. And for sim racers pushing the limits of realism and durability, the QR2 Pro Wheel-Side is the ultimate benchmark.

Your quick release is more than just a connector—it's part of the driving experience.
