Tips & Mistakes to Avoid

Get your SETUP right

01

Space, mounting and stability

The most compact solution is to clamp the Base and wheel to a desk, and rest the pedals on the floor. Ensure you have a sturdy table, and try to brace the pedals against a solid object. A dedicated cockpit is always superior, retaining the same driving position for every race.

02

Cabling, firmware updates, calibration

Fanatec products always include the cables you need. Try to route them carefully using cable management clips. Fanatec cockpits have integrated cable management solutions. Once connected, install the Fanatec App and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete the firmware updates and calibration.

03

Matching wheelbase torque to rig stability

Table clamp solutions ultimately depend on the stability of the table itself. Even at 8 Nm torque, using a table is a compromise. At 15 Nm and higher, it is essential to use a dedicated sim rig to get the most out of the Base. All Fanatec Cockpits are sturdy enough to handle huge torque values.

04

Upgrading path: what to buy now vs later

A simple driving sim setup of Base, Wheel, and Pedals can give you a great experience if set up with a stable desk and chair. The next step up is to use a cockpit, then you have the foundation to apply serious upgrades. Stronger pedals makes the biggest difference to your lap times.

Frequently asked questions

On Windows PC, yes. Fanatec pedals can be connected via USB directly to a PC, allowing them to be used as a separate device. (CSL Pedals require the ClubSport USB Adapter, or the Load Cell Kit upgrade.)

Yes. Fanatec has a range of PlayStation-licensed products and XBOX-licensed products. These can also be combined to create a multi-platform setup.

Anything above 4 Nm has the potential to deliver the right feedback cues you need to understand what the car is doing. Below 8 Nm tends to work best with lightweight steering wheels, and is appropriate for desk setups. Around 12 Nm is where steering forces start to feel very realistic. Going higher than 12 Nm gives you more headroom to experience more feedback detail through the greater dynamic range.

Wheel, Base, and Pedals is the minimum driving simulator setup you need to enjoy sim racing on a desk. It's compact and can be stored away after use. But your driving position and sense of connection with the car will be compromised. A full cockpit solves this and makes the experience more realistic and improves your consistency as a driver.

If you're starting from scratch, a Ready2Race bundle that contains a Base, Wheel, and Pedals is a great place to start. You'll want to mount this to a cockpit for the best experience, and the CSL Cockpit is an affordable solution that is surprisingly strong. This gives you a platform to step up the hardware performance. Most drivers recommend upgrading your pedals first, either with the CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit, or with a more premium option like CSL Elite Pedals V2, or ClubSport Pedals. Then a higher torque Base will add significantly to the realism, as would an accessory like the ClubSport Shifter. And of course, you can never have too many wheels - one for every driving style. For the ultimate experience, the Podium Series delivers incredible performance and immersion.
