Why do different Fanatec steering wheels use different paddle shifters?

You may have noticed that the paddle shifters in Fanatec steering wheels aren't all the same. Some wheels support interchangeable paddle modules, while others use completely bespoke designs.

Rather than treating paddle shifters as a one-size-fits-all component, Fanatec designs each solution around the goals of the steering wheel itself. In some cases that means modularity. In others, it means starting from a blank sheet of paper.

ClubSport and modular paddles

The ClubSport range is built around flexibility. Beginning with the ClubSport Universal Hub in 2014, Fanatec introduced the concept of modular wheel components, including the ability to remove the paddle modules.

That philosophy now extends across the modern ClubSport range, including the self-contained wheels. Most models are equipped with the ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module as standard, while those looking for additional inputs and dual analog paddles can upgrade to the Podium Advanced Paddle Module.

Why some wheels use dedicated paddle designs

Modularity isn't always the right answer.

Many CSL steering wheels feature integrated paddle mechanisms that aren't designed to be replaced. While this keeps costs under control, it also gives engineers greater freedom to optimize each design. The size, shape, travel, and positioning of the paddles can all be tailored specifically to that steering wheel, creating a more cohesive product.

The same thinking applies at the very top of the range, although for a different reason. The Podium Steering Wheel BMW M4 GT3 uses bespoke carbon fiber push-pull paddles, allowing upshifts and downshifts from either side of the wheel, or for other inputs to be assigned. In this case, the objective was to design the ultimate paddles specifically for this wheel, Virtually every component is bespoke to align with BMW M Motorsport’s requirements.

When engineering follows the design

Sometimes a steering wheel presents an engineering challenge that simply can't be solved with an existing mechanism.

The ClubSport Steering Wheel Porsche Vision GT is a great example. Its distinctive spoke design leaves little space where a conventional magnetic paddle system would normally sit. Rather than altering the appearance of the wheel, Fanatec developed a completely new shifter mechanism with inverted hinging and different sensing technology to make the design work.

Different designs for different drivers

It would certainly be more efficient to use the same paddle shifters across every steering wheel. Instead, Fanatec takes the approach that the paddle mechanism should suit the wheel it's attached to.

Sometimes that means giving enthusiasts a clear upgrade path. Sometimes it means creating a dedicated design that better suits the shape of the wheel, or gives it a distinct mechanical character that becomes part of the driving experience.

Every Fanatec steering wheel has its own personality, and the paddle shifters are an important part of what makes each one feel unique.
