I did that as well but it was too far still, needed a good 2.5-3 inches...it actually could use a little more as it's still too far away. I might just give up the whole plan and sell this wheel to buy a flat faced wheel and not have to deal with certain things like reaching inside the steering wheel to push the buttons.
