Fanatec QR2 vs QR1: Are There Any Limitations to Upgrade? | Fanatec

BUYERS'S GUIDES

Upgrading your Fanatec Wheel Base to QR2

Last updated:

With the rapid evolution of technology, it's natural for older components to be replaced with new, improved versions. This trend is evident in the development of Quick Release 2 (QR2), a system designed to offer better performance and reliability for sim racing enthusiasts. QR2 is an upgrade over previous quick-release systems, providing a range of features that appeal to both professional drivers and dedicated sim racers.

Originally, QR2 was developed for the BMW M4 GT3 and GT4 competitions to meet FIA regulations. Specifically, it was designed around the QR2 Pro Wheel-Side, which would be used in these high-performance racing environments. However, recognizing the growing demand from the community, Fanatec expanded the QR2 family to include the QR2 Wheel-Side and the QR2 Lite Wheel-Side, both of which offer a more affordable entry point without sacrificing much in terms of performance or durability.

QR2 Base-Side types and compatibility

As sim racing technology continues to advance, many users wonder whether it’s possible to upgrade their current setups to incorporate QR2. The short answer is: it depends. Fanatec currently offers two types of QR2 Base-Side systems: the QR2 Base-Side (Type-C) and the QR2 Base-Side (Type-F). The QR2 Base-Side (Type-C) is compatible with the CSL DD and GT DD wheel bases, two popular options for sim racers. On the other hand, the QR2 Base-Side (Type-F) is specifically designed for the higher-end Podium DD1 and DD2 wheel bases. These new QR2 systems provide enhanced functionality, allowing racers to easily swap steering wheels with a secure, quick-release mechanism.

However, not all older Fanatec wheel bases are compatible with QR2. If you have older models like the CSL Elite Wheel Base or the CSW V2.5, unfortunately, you will not be able to upgrade these to QR2. The reason for this is that QR1 and QR2 are not compatible, and these older wheel bases lack the necessary hardware to support the QR2 system. This also extends to the steering wheels used with these systems. If you have older steering wheels like the CSL Elite P1 V1, you will not be able to upgrade them to QR2 either.

How to check if your wheel can be upgraded

One way to determine whether your current steering wheel is upgradeable to QR2 is by checking the back of it. If you notice a set of screws around the quick release, this means the quick release can be removed and replaced with the QR2 system. On the other hand, if there are no screws and the quick release seems to be built into the wheel, upgrading to QR2 won’t be possible. However, Fanatec has developed newer versions of older steering wheels that are compatible with QR2. For example, the CSL Steering Wheel P1 V2 is essentially the same as the P1 V1, but it comes with a pre-installed QR2, making it ready for the latest quick-release system.

Upgrade tips and final considerations

As with any hardware upgrade, it's essential to check the compatibility section of any product you intend to purchase. This will ensure that the new components will integrate seamlessly with your current setup. By taking the time to research your options, you can make a well-informed decision and gradually enhance your sim racing rig as your needs evolve. Whether you're just starting or looking to take your setup to the next level, ensuring compatibility is the key to a smooth and successful upgrade process.
